Well, I've had a break from school and I also took a break from writing anything here. The spring semester has started and I have a week under my belt. I'm taking 3 classes this semester as well as teaching a class in the Center for Biblical Studies.
On Tuesday and Thursday mornings I have Exegesis of Gospel Narrative. This class is taught by Dr. Hall Harris and Dr. Darrell Bock. Dr. Harris is the General Editor of the NET Bible and Dr. Bock is probably best known for being a scholar on the life of Jesus and for his book Breaking the DaVinci Code. He has also been on numerous TV interviews on this topic. Not only is the class very interesting, the profs are team teaching in a unique way. In most team taught courses the profs switch out class periods or weeks. In this class, both profs are in front of the class together. The interaction is not only great to watch and listen to but they are really funny at times.
On Wednesday and Friday afternoons I am taking my first expository preaching course and my second Hebrew course. My pastor is also my preaching professor this semester. Its good to have a good example to follow of someone who "preaches what he preaches". I'm already learning a lot in there after 2 class sessions.
A Word for Today
Expository Preaching - Haddon Robinson (whose book we are using for class) defines expository preaching as: "the communication of a biblical concept derived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical, and literary study of a passage in its context which the Holy Spirit first applies the personality and experience of the preacher, then through him to his hearers." In a nutshell, expository preaching is preaching in which God's word drives the message through his messenger by the Holy Spirit.
